The story of Fauziya Kassindja, who fled her African homeland to escape female genital mutilation and forced polygamy. Fauziya's progressive father had shielded her from the tribal practice of polygamy and female genital mutilation in Togo, Africa, but when he died in 1993, everything changed. At the age of 17, she was forced to marry a much older man who already had three wives, and to undergo preparation for female genital mutilation without any painkillers or antibiotics. Days before the ritual was to take place, Fauziya's sister helped her escape to Germany, and from there she travelled to the United States seeking political asylum. When she arrived in the US she was stripped, shackled and imprisoned for 16 months by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Layli Miller Bashir, a second-year law student assigned to Fauziya's case, found a broken, emaciated girl who had been shuffled from prison to prison, was suffering from an untreated bleeding ulcer, had been subjected to several strip searches, and denied the right to follow her daily religious practices. She enlisted law professor, Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law, who assembled a team to fight on Fauziya's behalf. Fauziya was finally granted asylum on 13 June 1996, a landmark decision.

Just hours before her impending and much feared circumcision and days before her marriage to a polygamist, 17-year-old Fauziya Kassindja flees an oppressive life in Togo, seeking political asylum in the United States. But her troubles are far from over once Kassindja arrives in the place where she hopes to find her freedom. The harrowing tale of Do They Hear You When You Cry? depicts the agonizing months spent behind bars waiting for her release.
Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph (Sister Act II, Distinguished Gentleman, Designing Women) delivers the audio version of this passionate and vivid story. Using a variety of accents, intonations, and diction, she develops distinct voices for the dozens of people who come into contact with the young woman. Through her creative, melodic performance, Ralph provides the biography with energy and enthusiasm. Listeners are quickly drawn into Kassindja's frightening world and the ordeal surrounding her desperate fight for freedom. Do They Hear You When You Cry? is a profoundly moving story of strength and perseverance. (Running time: six hours, four cassettes) --Gina Kaysen
From Library Journal
Kassindja was at the center of the landmark U.S. case that legitimized giving asylum to a woman who flees her country to avoid ritual genital mutilation. This is her story?and that of her lawyer, Bashir?who took up her cause after Kassindja was imprisoned by the INS upon arriving here from Togo.

From Booklist
Alone, afraid, and naive--but hopeful--17-year-old Fauziya Kassindja, a refugee from her native Togo, arrived in the U.S. seeking asylum in December 1994. Fleeing a forced polygamous marriage at the hands of her recently deceased father's relatives, she would have been forced to undergo "cleansing," the horrifying ritual of female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice resulting in painful suffering, and occasionally death, for women and girls in many parts of the world. Fauziya, in her innocence, did not anticipate the harsh cruelties she would endure upon her arrival in the U.S.: inhumane conditions and abusive guards in four prisons where she was detained for more than 16 months; callous Immigration and Naturalization Service personnel; lack of urgently needed medical attention and a deep depression that threatened to destroy her very spirit. Nor could she have anticipated the wealth of support that would come to her through the deeply committed women and men on her legal team, from other detainees with whom she forged an unbreakable bond, and through her own unshakable religious beliefs. Coauthored by Fauziya's key provider of legal and moral support, this is an intense and suspenseful account of the roller coaster of hope and despair during the arduous process of winning asylum. A fast-paced, can't-put-it-down book--shocking, heartbreaking, and inspiring. Grace Fill
